What are mission and vision?

Mission and vision are postulates by which a business or organization raises the objectives you want to achieve in the medium and long term. Together they describe the identity and the theoretical basis of an organization, company or brand.

Both have characteristics that distinguish them so they should not be confused, but they should be formulated together since it is important that they be consistent with each other and that they foresee the situations that may occur within a certain period of time.

  • The mission describes the motive or reason for being of an organization, company or institution. It focuses on the objectives to be achieved in the present. It must be precisely and concretely defined to guide the workgroup In day to day. For example: The company's mission is to improve the quality of automobiles.
  • The view describes an ideal expectation of what the organization is expected to be or to achieve in the future. It should be realistic, but it can be ambitious; its function is to guide and motivate the group to continue with the work. Mission and vision are part of a strategy and they seek to achieve the same objective. Both concepts play an important role as psychological and organizational aspects within an institution. They are usually formulated by the top management or the founders of the organization.

Once the company has a specific objective, both concepts allow it to be in the present (mission) and project itself into the future (vision): from the rational plane, since they link means and ends; and from the emotional, since they inspire and encourage to act even in unfavorable situations.

The mission depends on the activity that the organization carries out, the resources it has, the type of business concerned, the needs of thepopulation at that given moment and the market situation.

The vision depends on the present and future material possibilities as perceived by the organization, on the unexpected events that may occur and on the mission that has been set.

Differences between mission and business vision

While the mission must be precisely defined and feasible, the vision is a projection into the future that describes the aspirations of the organization. It is usually more generic than the mission, which makes it less precise and less specific.

The vision marks a goal final where the organization wants to go in the future. For its part, the mission is the path through which the members of the company or organization willreality that vision through day-to-day goals.

The mission must be written in the present tense and answer the following questions: What does the organization do? Who is the recipient of your products/services? How will you help your customers?
