This position is very comfortable and relaxing as it allows the lower legs to be positioned variably or the upper body to be leaned against. In addition, the joints and muscles are relieved and the body weight is distributed over a large area.

When a baby begins to sit alone, it tries to make contact with the outside world. Sitting is much easier and more comfortable than standing or running, which is why toddlers are the first to learn.

Function & task

Many people perform an activity every day that takes place while sitting. A few things should be considered here: The backrest as well as the seat of the chair at work should be correctly shaped and adapt to the body. In the lower and middle area, the backrest should support the human back so that the lumbar area and the spine can be properly supported.

Not only should your buttocks be on the seat, your thighs should also be supported. You should sit upright with your knees and elbows at right angles. The appropriate seat height and seat width should be individually adapted. Armrests are also an advantage, so the body can relax better during the sitting phase.

Since a lot of activities can only be done while sitting, you cannot do without it. With a wedge or mobile cushion, however, sitting can be made much more back-friendly and comfortable.

A wedge cushion consists of a foam that has a wedge-shaped shape and is covered with fabric. These pillows are available in different shapes and sizes and are mostly between 10 and 12 cm high. The seat is raised so that the back is straight and upright.

Nevertheless, hours of uninterrupted sitting should be avoided. Standing and moving in between helps a lot. Sitting for more than 20 minutes at a time is unhealthy, as it leads to an undersupply of the intervertebral discs. It is therefore good to stand as often as possible, be it on the phone or when fetching files. It is also helpful to walk around while thinking. Another option is to use a standing desk. Sitting too long damages the organism and the risk of cardiovascular diseases increases. Likewise, people who sit for a long time are at risk of developing cancer or diabetes.

Sitting for long periods is also very bad for the leg veins. In the sitting position, the blood sinks more easily into the legs and thereby strains the blood vessels. The reason for this is that the calf muscle pump can only be used little when sitting. It is active when walking, as the person tenses his calf muscles with every step. Then it presses on veins in the area, which pumps blood from the legs back to the heart. As a result, when you sit, the blood can build up in the veins and the legs can swell.

Very long periods of sitting, such as on an airplane, can lead to thrombosis or clot formation. Good blood circulation is necessary to avoid varicose veins. But not everyone who sits too long gets varicose veins.

Everyone knows a stiff and tense feeling after a whole day on a chair. When seated, the blood flows much more slowly, it accumulates and the oxygen content decreases. In addition, unused muscles become slack in the long run and the metabolism in the cells is reduced. It is very important for the human body cells to keep moving.

Even physical activity does not automatically compensate for the dangers of long periods of sitting. Nevertheless, exercising remains healthy and a daily walk is very good for the body.
