We explain what cult language is, when it is used, its characteristics and examples. Also, the colloquial, vulgar and slang languages.

The use of the cultured language is usually used by people with a greater command of the language.

What is educated language?

It is understood by language worship, cultured language, cultured register, cultured norm or cultured level of the language to the most correct and solvent use of the language verbal, that is, it is the way in which it is expected to be used by persons with higher educational level and greater command of idiom.

The latter, of course, we must take it not as an absolute reality, but as a principle of normalization and standardization of the language, since there may be different cultured registers of the same language, depending on its variants dialects and geographic. In other words, the educated norm is the scale with which the cultured or correct use of the language is distinguished from its popular or colloquial uses.

The concept of educated language applies above all to the way of using the syntax, the phonetics and the grammar, both in their contexts spoken as written, since the spelling is based on conventions outside the use of the language. Thus, a person can use a cult register and a colloquial register or even vulgar, at the convenience of the context and the situation.

Hence, there are:

  • Formal cultured record, used on occasions with great care and respect.
  • Informal cult record, used in situations of trust.

In both cases, however, the command of the language will tend to follow the rules linguistics and grammar, and to use a high-level vocabulary.

Characteristics of the learned language

In its general aspects, the cultured language is characterized by the following:

  • He composes a fluid and continuous speech, with a complex lexicon that allows very precise expressions.
  • Use words accurately and correctly, avoiding barbarism and with a certain stylistic richness.
  • He is clear and elegant in his way of saying things.
  • He does not usually incur vulgarisms, but rather goes to cultisms and original turns of the language.

Examples of cultured language

An example of a cultured language is that used by two intellectuals in a debate on culture, or by long-standing and high-level politicians in their official speeches on a national date, or the speech of acceptance of a Nobel Prize in Literature, to mention some very obvious cases.

Colloquial language

The colloquial language is the one used in everyday speech.

When we talk about colloquial language, colloquial language or colloquial register, we are referring to the informal, street way of speaking, which is used in contexts far from elegance, dedication and style.

In the colloquial language there is less respect for the rules and less attention is paid to style and vocabulary, since immediate understanding prevails and also usually occurs in situations of trust, or in any case in situations in which there is no margin for a thorough preparation of what is to be said. It is, in other words, the speaks everyday.

Vulgar language

For its part, vulgar language (that is, of common people) or vulgar language, is the way of using the language totally contrary to the educated norm. It can be considered a low, neglected or uneducated form of the same colloquial language, since it is a use of the language that is not respectful of the rules, uneducated, that shows little culture and that, in general, is frowned upon in formal situations .

In the vulgar language, vulgarisms abound, obviously, as well as improprieties and barbarisms, since it is a way of speaking that barely handles the rules of the language.

Slang language

Finally, we refer to slang language or the jargon to the hyperspecialized or cryptic way in which people who belong to the same exclusive social, academic or political circle communicate.

This means that the uninitiated (those who do not know the code, or those who lack the required professional educational training) will not understand what is meant, since jargons are very particular and exclusive ways of communicating.

There are cultured and professional jargons, such as those used in specialized disciplines with their own vocabulary, and vulgar jargons, such as those used by urban tribes or criminal groups.
