The Armodafinil is used to combat various irregularities in the sleep rhythm. So far, the drug is only available on the US market. Due to its effect, it is often ascribed a structural similarity to stimulating agents.
What is Armodafinil?
It was not until 2004 that armodafinil was discovered as a drug by researchers in the United States of America. Its approval is currently limited to the American continent. It is uncertain whether the preparation will also be available in Germany in the foreseeable future.
In this country it is used in very weak doses as part of the drug treatment of various sleeping diseases. However, full approval has not yet been given. This may also be due to the controversial effect of the Armodafinil.
Critics see it as a drug- and doping-like product. The substance is in the form of a white powder. It is therefore administered in the form of tablets and, in rare cases, as a capsule.
Pharmacological effect
When adults have an increased tendency to sleep, the remedy Modafinil is used comparatively often. A wakefulness effect is ascribed to it. However, messenger substances, receptors and chemical substances can be present in the human organism that require a matching mirror-inverted variant.
This is the case with the fight against narcolepsy and increased daytime tiredness. Modafinil alone is not enough here. Rather, the Armodafinil is also administered. Both remedies in turn work in a certain spectrum of the body. Armodafinil occupies special receptors in the nervous system. However, there has not yet been any conclusive research into which individual processes in the organism are triggered by taking the drug. However, the motor activities are increased.
As a result, the person affected is able to focus on doing his day's work while awake. He will notice no or only an inhibited tendency to sleep. He also needs fewer breaks for his activities. So the effect is definitely stimulating. This in turn results in the often expressed criticism of the drug, which can lead to mood swings and depression alike.
Medical application & use
Armodafinil is primarily used when the person's sleep rhythm is damaged. This can be the case in narcolepsy, for example. The patient will repeatedly fall into spontaneous fatigue. In extreme situations, this can result in sleep that extends from night through day.
Another area of application for the drug is shiftworker syndrome. People who work at different times lose their rhythm of rest. In these cases it is difficult to find sleep outside of the job. Fatigue, on the other hand, often strikes during work. In these initial situations, the Armodafinil should keep the person concerned awake.
In addition, the preparation seems to be possible even with slight mood swings. The stimulating effect is currently being researched in various psychological studies. In contrast, an influence on the willingness to perform in athletes was not confirmed. An improvement in fitness or motor skills could therefore not be demonstrated. The brain is more likely to benefit from the Armodafinil.

The side effects of the preparation are serious. This can lead to milder complaints such as headaches or disorders of the gastrointestinal tract. Defense reactions of the body are also recorded relatively often. These can be seen in a symptom similar to hay fever.
Skin rashes have also been noticed. The latter signs are usually limited temporarily. They should subside after a few days or weeks - if there is no improvement, the Armodafinil will be discontinued anyway. In addition to the physical, mental complaints can also occur. In long-term use, patients often complain of a drop in mood.
Sometimes this is said to even result in a depressive phase with a tendency to suicide. The remedy can thus spontaneously improve the state of mind and trigger a wakefulness of the patient. However, according to the current state of research, the opposite of this seems to be the case when applied permanently.
